This Week’s Issue:
The Cascading Effect
Frequently when implementing business plans, you find that top management stops short of cascading the company plan throughout their organizations. Too often top management develops viable business plans and then fails to assure they are cascaded deep enough within the organization to those most responsible for implementing the plan.
How frequently are you frustrated because of the lack of implementation, accountability, and results? It is important to make sure each business unit, each functional department, all the way down to those who can make a difference have a business plan. Those plans should align the objectives of their group to the objectives of their business unit, as well as with the company's strategy and objectives.
Most companies have a viable internal planning process but many times they fall short of reaching employees/departments that have the most impact on getting results. For each formal planning period, business units, as well as department managers, are given planning packages with the instructions to complete them and be prepared to present them at some future date. For many managers, planning is just an unnecessary evil. It is at this level where the planning effectiveness begins to break down.
To have an effective plan, everyone at every level of every organization needs to understand the company's objectives, and understand how they can make a difference by successfully doing their jobs. If the planning system doesn't accommodate business plans at all levels of the company, how can you expect employees, doing the hands-on implementation, to have a sense of purpose, or more importantly, understand what it is they are trying to accomplish?
Someone once said, "It's like herding cats." If employees can't see the big picture, they will be going in different directions with an honest attempt to contribute, yet unable to achieve the expected results. If you're failing to get the alignment, accountability, or results you expect, dedicate someone who can see the big picture to make sure all unit and department plans cascade down throughout the company, as well as, cascade up.
You'll be surprised by the results achieved.
